Self-introduction

Dr. Ruoxi Wang’s Ph.D. thesis was mentored by Dr. Zhuohua Zhang at Central South University (CSU). He joined Dr. Eric H. Baehrecke’s laboratory at the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School as a visiting scholar and continued his post-doctoral training in the Baehrecke laboratory after he obtained his Ph.D. degree from CSU. Dr. Wang joined school of life and sciences of Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) as a tenure track assistant professor. His research focuses on identification of the regulations of developmentally programmed autophagy and the mechanisms of organelle clearance regulated by inter-organelle communications.


Research Interests:

Autophagy is a cellular self-eating process to maintain cell health and homeostasis. During Drosophila melanogaster development, intestinal enterocytes undergo a developmentally programmed autophagy. This autophagy involves the selective recruitment of both mitochondria and ER cargoes into forming autophagosomes. Dr. Wang uses both sophisticated genetic and cell biological approaches to study the genes and mechanisms that regulate selective organelle clearance. Wang lab focuses on characterization of genes and mechanisms that are either specifically required for ER clearance, or reciprocally influence the balance of ER, mitochondria, and possibly other organelles in a cell in a physiological animal model, and possibly how alterations of this balance may contribute to diseases.
